Starlight Music Lessons is the only company of its kind to offer lessons with Apprentice Teachers. The Apprentice Teacher program is perfect for those families on a tight budget looking for a way to experience lessons. Apprentices offer lessons in your home, but at a greatly reduced rate.

Our Apprentice Teachers are new at teaching and have less teaching experience than our Master Teachers. Apprentices are usually younger, some in college or just out of college, though we do have quite a few “seasoned” adult apprentices looking for a new career path.

Apprentices are trained by our Head Teacher, using a proven training program designed to prepare the teachers for real-life teaching situations. Our Head Teacher has a passion for teaching and guiding fellow teachers, and shares her love for teaching with our apprentices.

The Apprentice Teacher must pass an audition and theory test just like our Master Teachers, but the qualifications are more relaxed. The Apprentice Teacher must pass a thorough background check with the same rigorous standards as our Master Teachers and staff.

Is An Apprentice Teacher Right For You?
While the low price of our apprentice program is definitely appealing, it is important to consider all aspects of the program before deciding that an apprentice is right for your family.

-Only students with less than two years of lesson experience may work with Apprentice Teachers. Students with more than two years of lesson experience need a Master Teacher.

-If you are taking lessons in order to get into music school, do competitions or performances, prepare for an audition or any other skill-based goal, the Apprentice Teacher program is NOT for you. A Master Teacher will help you best prepare for these important goals.

-Students and parents working with Apprentices must be patient while the teacher is learning to teach. Sometimes the teacher may not immediately understand how to explain something. Be patient while the apprentice learns the art of teaching.

-Understand that there is a higher turnover rate with apprentice teachers than with Master Teachers. Apprentices are often still trying to “figure things out.” They often do not yet know for sure that teaching music is the career they want the rest of their life. Sometimes the apprentice decides that teaching is not for them. Sometimes we decide that the apprentice is not right for our company and our students. This results in higher turnover rates than you would have with a Master Teacher.

-Know that after two years as an apprentice, the teacher will move up to a Master level teacher, assuming he/she has met the requirements for a Master Teacher. At that time, you will have the option of working with your current teacher at the new Master Teacher rate, or switching to a different Apprentice.

Starlight Music Lessons offers an exceptional recital/concert experience for the student. Although participation is not mandatory, each student is strongly encouraged to perform as our recitals are the highlight of the year and serve to provide motivation for even the most "stage shy" student.

Recitals are held in local auditoriums, with a maximum or 40-50 students per show.

We have a big show every spring, usually in May or June. Winter and Summer recitals are held if there is enough student interest in your area. In addition, we combine recitals with community service by offering organized performing opportunities at nursing homes and retirement apartments. Click here for more information about recitals!
